Matariki Festival is New Zealand's traditional Maori New Year, an annual celebration organized by the local government and Aukland Council.
The theme of the 2022 festival is derived from the traditional Maori fable - "The Origin of Fire". We unite the community to create an immersive audio-visual journey for citizens in Manukau Square through creative digital technology.
Our plan has been communicated twice with council members, and has been well received and feedback by council members.
As an immigrant country, New Zealand continues to widen the inequality gap between New Zealand's native Māori and immigrants in terms of socioeconomics, medical care and education.
The technology industry is New Zealand's third-largest export, worth $8.7 billion a year, but Māori account for only 6% of jobs in the sector.
We hope Matariki 2022 can be an opportunity to jointly recreate traditional Maori fables through digital creative technology and encourage Maori youth to enter the technology industry.
The fable "The Origin of Fire" reflects the sincere and exploratory personality of the Maori people. We are united with local farms and schools, and hope that the Fire Festival will ignite enthusiasm and allow more people to participate.
